Forklift Seat Belts

Seat Belts for Forklift - This guideline reason is to be able to explain the Regulation requirements for the use of driver restraints or seatbelts on forklifts. It is the employers' responsibility to make sure that each machinery, piece of equipment and device within the workplace is selected and used correctly and operated according to the manufacturer's directions.

Rough Terrain lift trucks have to meet the guidelines of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 regarding their maintenance, inspection, fabrication, use and design.

Mobile machinery like for instance side boom tractors along with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS), should include seat belts which meet the Society of Automotive Engineers safety requirements; Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If any mobile equipment has seat belts required by law, the operator and subsequent passengers need to make sure they utilize the belts every time the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation in view of the fact that this could cause the machine to become unstable and thus, unsafe.

While operating a lift truck, the seat belt requirements would depend on a number of factors. Contributing factors to this determination may include whether the the forklift is outfitted with a Rollover Protective Structure, the type of lift truck itself and the year the forklift was actually made. The manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.

In the case of powered industrial lift trucks, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 refers to a driver restraint device, enclosure or system. A driver restraint device, enclosure or system is intended to help the operator in reducing the possibility of entrapment of the head and/or torso between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system may include a seat belt, although a seat belt is not necessarily a part of such device or system.
